JAMMIE TIME

I had just come home from work when my son Alex met me at the front door. “How was your day?” He asked as he held the door open for me.

“It’s going to be better in about five minutes!” I said as I dropped my work bags on the nearest chair and headed to my bedroom.

A few minutes later I came back out to the living room wearing my pajamas and my fuzzy warm bathrobe. “Now that’s better.” I said with a sigh as I sat down on the couch.

Alex came out from the kitchen and saw me sitting there. “It’s bedtime already?” He asked as he laughed.

“It’s the only good thing about Daylight Savings Time.” I said as I grabbed the blanket off the back of the couch and draped it over me. “Guilt-free early PJ time!” I reached for my book that was on the coffee table and quickly opened it. “Just give me about thirty minutes to wind down and then I’ll start dinner.” I moved a pillow behind my back. “Does that sound good to you?”

Alex sat down at the other end of the couch and started to laugh. “I’m going to guess you’ll read for about five minutes before you’re putting your book down and are ready to take a nap.”

I shrugged my shoulders. “I’m not going to say you’re wrong about that.” I laughed. “But I promise, if I do, it will be a quick one.”

Alex got up from the couch. “Do you want me to make you a cup of tea?”

I looked up from my book. “Really? That sounds awesome!”

“Regular or decaf?” He asked as he headed for the kitchen.

“Decaf!” I called. “I think there’s some decaf Chi in the cabinet.”

My husband Steven came in the front door. “Hey, everyone!” He called as he walked into the living room and saw me snuggled up on the couch. “Did I miss dinner?” He asked.

“Haven’t even started it yet.” I leaned back against the pillow. “I’m going to read my book for about thirty minutes and relax. Then I’ll start dinner.”

“So you’re taking a nap.” Steven said with a laugh as he headed for his office.

“Hey!” I called. “That doesn’t always happen!”

Alex came in holding my cup of tea. “Here you go.” He placed it on the table next to me.

“Thank you so much!” I took it from him. “You’re the absolute best!” I blew on it for a few seconds before taking a sip. “That’s so good.” I said with a sigh as I placed the cup on the coffee table. “You’re sure that’s the decaf one, right?”

Alex looked confused. “I took it from the box that said Chi tea.”

“I have two different boxes.” I said looking over at my teacup. “One’s decaf and one isn’t.”

Alex shrugged his shoulders. “I’ll go check.” He went back to the kitchen while I took another sip of my tea.

“Oh, man!” Alex came back holding the box. “I didn’t realize there were two kinds.” He said. “I gave you the one with caffeine in it.”

“I knew it tasted too good to be decaf.” I said as I placed the cup back on the coffee table and went back to my book. “Well, the good news is I’ll be skipping my nap and dinner won’t be late now!”
